Spring is almost here and time to plant !!

Below is a sample of what we will be planting for our 2010 crop 

 
Beam's Yellow Pear Tomato New this year!    A winner of many taste tests. A 1 1/2 " pear tomato with great taste, ideal for salads.. Great for fresh eating or making tomato preserves. This is the tomato that put us on the map!!. It's name is Riesentraube, grown by Pennsylvania Dutch as early as 1856, translated it means," Giant bunches of grapes." Theses are very tasty ! We canned so much and gave the rest to friends and relatives. All who tried them raved about the sweetness and taste.
German Pink Tomato is an old Bavarian variety, Potato-leaf plant.  It has meaty fruit with few seeds with a full sweet flavor.  Excellent for canning, freezing and slicing.  Fruits range from 1 to 3 lbs.  Box Car Willie!!! You asked for it and we are going to grow it this year.  This heirloom won the taste test at the Plymouth  Farmers Market last year.  Just a great all around tomato.  A great tomato for eating fresh. 
Amish Paste Tomato  An Amish Heirloom discovered in Wisconsin.  Meaty fruit, and juicy; outstanding flavor.  This tomato is good for canning, sauce or fresh eating. Red Habanero Pepper  New this year! This little baby is 15-20 times hotter than the Jalapeno!!!  We had a few requests for these last season and so we are giving them a try.  This pepper is a Caribbean favorite.  Some people put  it into their salsa.  We got 'em if your man or woman enough to step up to the plate.
Cincinnati Market Radish  New this year!  Pre- 1870s heirloom that is fast becoming rare.  These deep red radishes are 6" long and tapered.  Their flesh is tender, crisp and mild. Minnesota Midget Melon  We offered these last year and were accepted well.  These round 3-4" fruits are thick golden-yellow flesh.  They are edible to the rind and have a  high sugar content.  They were first introduced by the University of Minnesota in 1948.
Miniature Chocolate, Red and Yellow Bell Peppers.  Here is  absolute fun! These are family heirlooms from Lucian Cress from Ohio.  She stuffed them with cabbage.  We pickled ours.  As a friend of ours says," Anything with vinegar can't be bad.".  I agree. Ancho Peppers; well Ancho when red and dried; Poblano when fresh and green.  The standard for Mexican cooking; sauces and stuffing.  The salsa we made was a hit. We froze the rest for later  use. 
Moon & Stars (Van Doren) Watermelon  This legendary watermelon was rediscovered on Merle Van Doren's farm near Macon, Missouri, where it had been brought from Tennessee.  Two seed companies offered it in the '30 but  the early history is unknown.  It is known that the Van Doren strain is the original.    Get yours before our grandkids get here! Cheese Pumpkin  Did you ever think of having pumpkin for a family meal?  These heirloom  pumpkins have long  been the favorites on the pilgrims table and the native Americans.  Come try one of these lost treasures, you will see how they got their name as the resemble a wheel of cheese.

Here we have given you a small taste of what we are going to plant in our gardens for 2010.  We also will be having  spinach, leeks, two more varieties of radishes, mustard greens, turnips, Jalapeno peppers, several different varieties of lettuce along with our fingerling potatoes that you all loved last season.

Some people ask why we take all the trouble to grow Heirloom vegetables and use the natural method ?  The answer is simple one word, taste.  Today's produce is engineered to ship and look good in the grocery store.  However, each time you mess with that fruit or vegetable you sacrifice taste.  If you want to see what things should taste like, come see us.  Remember if you need some suggestions for recipes or serving suggestions just ask we'll be happy to help.
